SPAZTECH: Philosopher, Photogger & Poet of Filth

This afternoon while I was driving through a small town in Alabama (Springville) visiting friends, I passed this old barn and thought, ‘Damn, that would have been a cool picture.. wait a minute dammit, I have my camera and no excuse not to..’ (insert u-turn), other than the ‘PRIVATE PROPERTY’ and ‘NO TRESSPASSING’ signs, so I quickly sloshed through the mud and thirty years worth of cow and horse shit and aligned myself the best I could in the one spot that wasn’t a giant water filled turd puddle and snapped this shot.

While a shot from the corner (where there were some really nice low hanging clouds in the background) was what I had really hoped for, I would have had to risk my life to climb over the privacy gate on the unpaved driveway and well, in small town America, people like to shoot people climbing over their well marked gates/fences/walls. (which are usually highly visible from their favorite ‘trespasser shooting window’)

Had it been a shot worthy of the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography or even worth adding to my Corbis Image collection I may have risked it, but a static photo of a barn with little light and a high chance of buckshot.. no thanks, maybe another morning I’ll get there before the bulldoze it and get the sun coming up and playing nice with the morning dew.. unless Farmer Fence is an early bird too and then I may have to settle for asking his/her permission.

I know it isn’t an Ansel Adams or a beautiful cover shot for Better Homes & Gardens but it’s a pretty cool picture in my opinion and the fact that I actually acted like a photographer and turned the car around to go snap the set of photos says more about my present state of mind than anything.. and THAT makes me very HAPPY!

I hope you enjoy it.. if not, tell me it sucks and I’ll still like it and will at best know that you’re reading this and I’m not wasting my time with all the typing for no reason.

While taking photos of gravesides at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta last year, I happened across this artists and her friends painting near a mausoleum and of course I had to take a photo of her and her work.. failing to get (or at least failing to REMEMBER) her name (it’s Kristen Wagoner).

So I will do the next best thing, I will post the photo of her work, and her photo here and if anyone knows who she is, feel free to contact me and I will update the post.*

* I was contacted by the artist, Kristen Wagoner, who says that the painting has been a work in progress and that it has come a long way, hopefully she will keep me posted and send some more of her work for all of us to enjoy.
